WHAT COACHING IS NOT

What do you do as a coach? That is a question I get asked a lot. I thought it might be easier to answer it by explaining what I don’t do:

– I don’t deal with psychological issues or past trauma. That requires the expertise of a trained psychiatrist or counsellor.  As a coach, my role is to help you gain clarity, focus and awareness about the current challenges that you are facing, explore ways with you to bridge the gap between where you are now and where you want to be.

-I do not do most of the talking, you do. Being coached is not a spectator sport. Coaching facilitates the process of personal transformation from the inside out. The coaching conversation creates a space for self-reflection to have that discussion that you may have been avoiding, never had a chance to, or simply couldn’t get past the negative voice of your inner critic. As a coach my role is to listen, question, challenge and guide you in the journey of change through greater self-awareness and actualisation.

– I am not there to dispense advice or provide a solution. The coaching process is designed to help broaden your lens on how you see yourself. This involves dealing with negative self beliefs, journeying towards self-realisation and harnessing the innate knowledge and resources that you have within you, to bring about positive change.
